More’s the pity, since Oliver’s only concern in life is for his basset hound, Schopenhauer.Įach of the novel’s chapters is about a particular staffer (or, in one case, a reader), from the editor in chief on down to a lowly copy editor. By 2004, his grandson, Oliver, will be in charge of the fates of the staff members whose stories make up the novel. The characters are, for the most part, the staff of an unnamed English-language newspaper founded in the 1950s - for reasons not revealed until the end - by an eccentric American businessman with the perfect name of Cyrus Ott. “The Imperfectionists” takes place in Rome. ![]() ![]() ![]() I almost feel sorry for Rachman, because a debut of this order sets the bar so high. The novel is alternately hilarious and heart-wrenching, and it’s assembled like a Rubik’s Cube. I still haven’t answered that question, nor do I know how someone so young - Rachman turns out to be 35, though he looks even younger in his author photo - could have acquired such a precocious grasp of human foibles. This first novel by Tom Rachman, a London-born journalist who has lived and worked all over the world, is so good I had to read it twice simply to figure out how he pulled it off. ![]() ![]() ![]() This aroused the Lorax, a furry creature who “ Speaks for the Trees” and tries to protect them. Who reads the Bible by knocking it off a table sometimes and then lets those verses guide her actions. A cat who believes she has a calling from the LORD to take care of her owner. Olivia the cat is by far my favorite character. So what can I really say in this review without spoiling things? This book is not what it at first seems to be (or even second or third) so if you feel yourself thinking you know exactly what type of book this is going to be and you think you won’t like it, keep reading, because it’s not that type of book. Turns out I had not figured it out, and it is that great. I thought I had the twist figured out and was all ready to be disappointed at it being not that great. What I can say after reading this is….there’s definitely a great twist that cannot be revealed or it will spoil the book. I also really enjoyed the bond of friendships that we see form within this story. It definitely is more back seat when it comes to the rock star type of authenticity and is focused more on the close-knit group who we are introduced to here. I definitely think that even if rock star romances aren’t your jive, you would still want to “rock on” with this story. I was highly impressed as I was highly curious to see how this author would be able to handle a rock star romance and I am impressed. ![]() This is what the author is so talented at and I loved the intricate layering that allows this romance to build within its intimacy in those small moments that make the wait of that “burn” so well worth it. ![]() I will say that at the first glance is that this is a sweet slow-built contemporary romance that will work for anyone that can appreciate a well-written slow-burn romance.
