The Lost Hero | The Son of Neptune | The Mark of Athena | The House of Hades | The Blood of Olympus The scent was reminiscent of skunk's stench mixed with foul bog vapors. Katobleps possessed a scent that reeked of death and famine, not dissimilar to the swamp gas that filled their favored environment. Perhaps the most terrifying feature of these beasts were their large and deadly bloodshot eyes. A katobleps' head resembled that of a warthog, and sat atop an elongated neck that seemed ill-suited for actual support. Katobleps had the large body of a buffalo, which sat atop squat legs that resembled those of a pachyderm. He used the power to turn the last katobleps into a snake. Frank Zhang destroyed all of them in Venice, which gave him the power of turning his enemy into a snake. They eat poisonous roots that grow by the canals and have a poisonous gaze as well as poisonous breath. Titus Crow is a kind of Sherlock Holmes of the paranormal set-somewhat detached in personality, possessed of estimable smarts, intermittently psychic and given to prescient dreams. The book wouldn’t be so frustrating in its clumsiness and stultifying dullness if the set up didn’t have so much potential. Pivotal leads? Deft characterization? Thrilling plot developments? Bah, says Lumley, measuring you for a coffin in the shape of a book, what do you need with story when you have all this comfy padding? Some of its twists and turns offer a tantalizing glimpse of story before throwing you back into heaps of digressive references. The narrative winds like a maze through a library piled high with dusty grimoires and faux-historical records, never revealing a definitive shape and dead-ending in a featureless wall of text. On evidence of this book, Lumley is more of an addled mythos encyclopediast than a storyteller. I’ve elected to start this experiment in casual criticism with The Burrowers Beneath, the first entry in the six book Titus Crow series by Brian Lumley. Given the nature of the Nightscape series, I thought it might be of interest to offer the occasional review of other, similarly Lovecraftian works. This is a super simple book about a little child making a snowman. But both my boys and I really enjoyed the collage style illustrations that tell the story of an entire family of snow people in this book. I realize I’m in the minority here, but I find the collage illustrations hard to make out, and the text often fails to engage my kids. Normally I am not a big fan of Ehlert’s books. They have a lot of fun together until the snowman melts – but George builds him again with the next big snowfall. George builds the perfect snowman in his backyard, and after he’s added the final touch the snowman comes to life. Personally, I couldn’t get into this book, but it was a favorite of my Three and especially my Five. This is a simple little board book with the familiar song as its text. The friendly illustrations make this quick book an enjoyable read.įrosty the Snowman, by Jack Rollins and Steve Nelson We enjoyed this easy reader book about a group of animals working together to build a snowman. From 1956 to 1957, he hosted the NBC variety series The Nat King Cole Show, which became the first nationally broadcast television show hosted by an African American. He regularly performed for civil rights organizations. While not a major vocal public figure in the civil rights movement, Cole was a member of his local NAACP branch and participated in the 1963 March on Washington. Despite achieving mainstream success, during his career he faced intense racial discrimination. Starting in 1950 he transitioned to become a solo singer billed as Nat King Cole. His trio was the model for small jazz ensembles that followed. Posthumously, Cole has received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award (1990), along with the Sammy Cahn Lifetime Achievement Award (1992) and has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (2000), and the National Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame (2020).Ĭole started his career as a jazz pianist in the late 1930s, where he formed The King Cole Trio which became the top-selling group (and the only black act) on Capitol Records in the 1940s. He received numerous accolades including a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame (1960) and a Special Achievement Golden Globe Award. Cole's career as a jazz and pop vocalist started in the late 1930s and spanned almost three decades where he found success and recorded over 100 songs that became hits on the pop charts. Nathaniel Adams Coles (March 17, 1919 – February 15, 1965), known professionally as Nat King Cole, was an American singer, jazz pianist, and actor. Brottman also considers representations of hyenas in today& s popular fiction, including The Lion King and The Life of Pi,where they are often depicted as villains, cowardly henchmen, or clowns, while ignoring their more noble qualities. She discovers that many cultures use parts of the hyena& from excrement and blood to genitalia and hair& to make charms that both avert evil and promote fertility. Investigating representations of the hyena throughout history, Brottman divulges that the hyena, though shrouded in taboo, has been the source of talismanic objects since the ancient Greek and Roman empires. Here to restore the Hyena& s reputation is Mikita Brottman, who offers an alternate view of these mistreated and misunderstood creatures and proves that they are complex, intelligent, and highly sociable animals. They have been scorned for centuries as little more than scavenging carrion-eaters, vandals, and thieves. Hyenas are almost universally regarded as nasty, scheming charlatans that skulk in the back alleyways of the animal kingdom. He was one of France’s most important medieval historians in the first half of the twentieth century, and he died at the hands of the Gestapo while serving in the Resistance in Paris in 1944. Marc Bloch’s history One of the historians whom I most admire is Marc Bloch. Marc Bloch, The Historian’s Craft, and the case for an Annaliste model of school history. What is a history education? Marc Bloch, The Historian’s Craft, and the case for an Annaliste model of school history. Bloch seemed to distil so much wisdom in this short book. For some years after that almost every talk or essay that I wrote used to start with ‘As Marc Bloch once said’. Marc Bloch and the craft of the historian In 1973 I read and indexed Marc Bloch’s The Historian’s Craft, written in 1944 while Bloch was in a prisoner of war camp and before he was executed. The very convoluted plot was difficult to follow. The narrator added to the problem with his flat unemotional voice. However the two main characters, purported to be in a long term relationship, were so lacking in emotion or humor that it was difficult imagine them as a couple. The genealogy research portions of the book were quite believable and explained well. I’m a genealogist so I was really looking forward to this book. All in all, a great story and a great narration. His reading brings the story to life, and immerses the audience in the story as an eyewitness to the drama and action as it takes place. He has a very pleasant voice to listen to, and portrays the different characters very effectively. The narration by Jonathan Ip is very good indeed. It draws on some intriguing elements of World War II history as the background for an investigation that takes place seventy years later and in a completely different context. This is a really interesting mystery story with a refreshing perspective that presents new opportunities and avenues for investigation than amateur sleuths or police detectives usually employ. But what if no such avenue of research is available? What if someone were to find that their past simply didn’t exist? Despite the fact that Peter Coldrick has no family and no family tree, his past does catch up with him in a way that sets Morton Farrier on a course of investigation that led to places that neither he nor the reader could possibly expect. The past holds all sorts of mysteries for those who enjoy researching their family tree. She'll do everything in her power to save him-and try to save herself-even if it means bringing the house down around them. But she won't let it have her brother, Roderick. The house itself is alive, and it will never let Madeline escape, driving her to madness just as it has all of her ancestors. But how did it come to this? In short, non-chronological chapters, Bethany Griffin masterfully spins a haunting and powerful tale of this tragic heroine and the curse on the Usher family. And she was put there by her own twin brother. The doomed heroine comes to the fore in this eerie reimagining of Edgar Allan Poe's classic short story "The Fall of the House of Usher." Gothic, moody, and suspenseful from beginning to end, The Fall is literary horror for fans of Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children and Asylum. |
